Day 21 - Cold Nights
2023-05-27

The contrast between our Belgian base camp (which is currently bathed in a sun-drenched vibrant springtime bloom) and our Greenland team's harsh frigid environment couldn't be any more stark. While Brecht and our participants have enjoyed relatively warm conditions during the past few days, they have been enduring exceedingly cold nights with temperatures dipping into the -30°C range. Such parameters make for spicy mornings and require an extra inspirational boost to crawl out of their toasty sleeping bags.

That added motivational carrot lies just over 200 kilometres to the east of their current position. They find themselves in the advantageous position of no longer climbing but now blissfully descending from the highest point on the ice cap, and they clearly feel the distinctive gravitational assist. Their sleds are also much lighter due to the amount of food consumed and fuel burned over the past 21 days. All of this has enabled them to progress an impressive 55 kilometres in the past two days.

The best news of all? The weather forecast shows a significant improvement over the next few hours and tomorrow looks even more promising than today.

Brecht phoned this morning before they headed out on the trail to share his ambitious plans for the team over the next 48 hours. They intend to cover as many kilometres as possible while the weather conditions allow and expect to put in two intense days over the weekend.

We'll continue to keep you updated on their progress here on our blog and you may also follow our team via the LiveExplorer tracking system at Expeditions Unlimited.
