Day 5 sliding into Day 6 - Opportunity
2023-05-12

Our accurate weather forecast yesterday showed strong headwinds throughout the day and these conditions indeed materialised. Brecht took this opportunity to give his team some extra time to rest and rejuvenate, their first break since the start of their challenging expedition. A Greenland traverse from the West coast to the East coast is a significant undertaking, one that requires a sustainable pace and consistent patience.

Ambition during a polar expedition is of course necessary, but it is often humility in the face of nature's omnipotence that allows a team to actually succeed.

That said, the team savoured some cosy tent time by sleeping a bit later than normal, reading, writing and eating. Those of us following them from our often frenetic perches could take a cue from their decision to pace themselves. It works.

The proof?

After the harsh winds subsided, Brecht invited the team for a late-afternoon/early evening session of progression and they seemingly effortlessly knocked out an additional 15 kilometres on a "rest" day. Each delicious bite forward into the Greenland icecap brings them that much closer to a currently distant but clear objective.

Please continue to follow their progress with regular blog posts here and also their LiveExplorer information can be found at Expeditions Unlimited.
