Greenland's impressive landscape was enveloped in a sober tint yesterday when our team finally arrived at their first stop of Nuuk. A remarkably low snow coverage caught the eye of our guide Brecht, someone who has been to Greenland many times and is a solid expert on its natural surroundings and in particular its unique fauna.
By the time Brecht and our team arrived at their final destination of Kangerlussuaq, they stepped outside to unusually balmy March temperatures of around -3° C. Once again, nature is demonstrating its ability to completely surprise and command attention.
Our team immediately began their final preparations to be ready for this morning's departure on their Arctic Circle Trail expedition. Boxes from an earlier supply shipment needed to be unpacked, the contents redistributed among each team member, and then repacked in their sleds. These pulkas will allow our team to travel autonomously for the next eight days, carrying all food, camping, communication, and progression supplies with them. Personal gear is kept to a strict minimum in order to facilitate smooth travel.
They then began the tediously repetitive task of once again setting up tents and re-manipulating other vital equipment so that their manoeuvres during the expedition will be seamless.
Our entire team - behind the scenes and in Greenland - honed the final details regarding communication equipment until nightfall, and then it was time for Brecht and our eager participants to slide into cozy beds for a final night of relative comfort before switching to tent life for the coming week.
We'll continue to follow their progress here with regular blog updates
