We have an expedition!
Our Greenland West to East Traverse team, led by Polar Experience guide Brecht De Meulenaer, has departed Kangerlussuaq this morning and is now navigating an intricate pathway up to the Greenland Ice Cap.
Brecht reported this morning that everyone was healthy, rested and ready to begin the more than 500 km journey to Isortoq on Greenland's east coast.
After a hearty breakfast, Pierre, Olivier and José-Luis loaded their sleds into the trailer that would carry the team to its starting point known as Point 660, the end of the road at the edge of the ice cap outside of Kangerlussuaq. Each sled at the start of the expedition weighs approximately 80 kilograms, an obviously heavy and relatively bulky mass that will need to be pulled behind each participant as he weaves his way up to the solid ice mass. Each day the sleds will diminish in weight as the team consumes food rations and burns stove fuel.
The weather conditions at departure were warm in Kangerlussuaq (around 5°C) with calm winds and partly cloudy skies. There is no total darkness anymore in the spring season which means that this expedition will proceed in natural light.
We'll continue to regularly update our team's progression throughout their month-long journey. You may also follow their progress via LiveTracker at Expeditions Unlimited.
