Day 16 - Storm Preparations
2021-05-23

After a long day, we arrived safe and well at Dye 2.

Dixie's reassuring words gave our Belgian/French back-office team a sigh of relief in the wee hours of our Sunday morning. Their final camp just outside of the abandoned radar station was dubbed Camp Serenity, a moniker that literally exudes the calm before the storm.

Why the deep breath?

Together with the keen eye of our climate specialists at Weather4Expeditions, we've been closely monitoring an usually powerful inclement weather system in both scope and intensity that appears to be dominating a large section of southern Greenland over the next few days. It is a highly unusual storm that leaves us in awe of its magnitude. The image below reflects Tuesday's forecast.

If this forecast holds, there will be hurricane force winds on the ice cap starting tomorrow, something that of course needs to be taken seriously. In Dixie & Seb's case, they could not be in a better location. The Dye 2 site offers options for protection against what would otherwise be a pure exposure against the brunt of the storm.

Dixie and Seb spent today in full preparation modus making everything secure and they are now relaxing in the knowledge that they may wait out this storm passage in relative comfort and safety.

We don't expect any progression for the next days, and will resume our blog once we have more news regarding their next steps forward.

In the meantime, we're thrilled with Dixie and Seb's recent progress and will be very happy to share their next advancement as soon as it is safe to recommence.
